eXo Platform is an open source project that was launched in 2002 by university students as one of the first Java portlet containers. The company grew in 2003 when the U.S. Department of Defense started using the software and adapting it to meet their needs through eXo’s open code. The company has grown in size with offices in the U.S., France, Tunisia, Ukraine and Vietnam. The app is used by a number of medium and large enterprises, with well-known clients including Allianz, Orange, and GlobeCast.
eXo Platform is built on open standards and open source technology meaning it has the extensibility to match the custom needs of the user. Customization tools include a web-based code editor, WCM template editing, REST services and mashup development tools, and a UI composer. Further flexibility is served by the wide number of possible integrations, including with enterprise directories, single sign-on systems, 3rd-party apps, and OEM partners. eXo also offers a native iPhone, iPad and Android app and is available in more than 50 languages.
While eXo Platform is built for business collaboration the interface has a fun and friendly feel to it. The social networking features and logical navigation make for a user experience that will be familiar for those who are new to using apps, as much as those who are not. There is a top navigational header giving access to all team and project-related data such as the live activity stream, forum, wiki, calendar, answers, FAQ, documents, dashboard, members, and any other add-ons you create. A menu on the left of the screen gives you access to your connections and all the company-wide content, such as blog, calendar, wiki, documents and forums. Below this is a menu giving access to all your team or project workspaces.
You can sign up for eXo Platform 4 (the latest version) via the pricing page on their website.
